Permanent Office Base Point

I posted this "tip" back in September and have since had time to evaluate it's use.

We set, in a convenient location (where the female boss of the yard would allow), a post for Locus base station. We were fortunate in having a local municipal GPS control network established within the last couple of years. Also had another system that I had established for my use in a nearby community. With all these gps points around it may seem unnecessary to set up a "home base point", but the convenience and security can't be beat.

We used a 8-1/2 foot long piece if 2-1/2 inch pipe (with flared end up) set 3-1/2 feet deep in concrete. In the base of the concrete set a 1/2" X 36" rebar with aluminum cap for a ground mark that would coincide with a "vertical offest" for the Locus unit. In the top of the pole, we installed the threaded end of a long retired prism pole in the concrete filled pipe. This places our "base unit" about 5.5 feet or so above the ground vertical point. This pole has been observed in from at least 8 other points in the various networks, as well as a PAC point that was used in establishing the other networks. In every case, we are within the specs of the L1 Locus units.
It's really nice to be able to leave a unit cooking on a secure point for all our local work.
I may try to find locations in other outlying areas to set up other "secure" sites.
