PM-3 Time
Posted By John Davis on 5/21/2008 at 8:36 PM

The time display difference between my two units varies each time I set up. To bring them within 1 second requires stoping an starting 3 or 4 times with allowing around 5 minutes for stabilization it is time loss. I read in the pm3 hints that the times need to correlate between the units. Any one have any advice on how close it needs to coorelate?
Thanks-John

go into Utilities

select GPS Init

pick your State from the drop down list.

Pick OK

If an hourglass comes up for a few seconds then it worked, if not (e.g. it drops back out too fast) you need to do it again.

I find it works best to let it run in Survey for a few minutes while I'm getting poles and other gear out of the truck then init if the date and time is wrong.

Sometimes the seconds just won't match.

It doesn't really matter because the times stored in the file are correct.

Somehow I managed to do a double tap.

Take advantage of the application note named Achieving Reliable Results_PM3.

Please explain how you managed to edit the first not the second post?

Phil: If I do a GPS Reset on both the time difference becomes one second, if cut off units and restart the time difference becomes 2 to 3 seconds. Horizontal correlation is good however verticalcorrelation is about 6 feet off. SBAS is not always present. Thus should one do a GPS Reset each time the units are started?

I do a GPS Init every time I use them (not a Reset-that's a different command).

Leave them on all day.

It doesn't matter if the times don't match exactly.

My clocks are not always an exact match. Sometimes JEAN and SKES match within a second. They vary from each other by as much as ten seconds.

I really tried to put what I have learned about it in the Achieving Reliable Results application note. That has been a work in progress since February 2006. Using that advice I have not lost field work since October 2007.

Jeannine and I did some interesting ProMark3 science projects while camping at Francis Beach last weekend.

How dull am I. I named my units, A, B and C.

I have two favorites:

The guy who named his ABLE, BAKR, and CHUK made me smile.

HUEY, DUEY, and LOUY also seemed like great names.

Mine remind me of the lights of my life every time I use them. SKES is for Sharon. It is the one Sharon took out of the box in February 2006. It is not hard to figure out why my newest ProMark3 is named JEAN for Jeannine.

One of my original two died after the engineers had me jumping them through some hoops. SKES survived that science project. I was going to have PHIL fixed but the engineers wanted to disect it. There must be a parable in there somewhere.

I named mine...
