GPS antenna question...
Posted By Trimble Man on 1/30/2002 at 8:58 PM

Just went and retrieved the receiver that I've been running for an pre-ORGIE. I am going to send these files to OPUS as another check on our game..

Antenna was coated with a layer of ice (not quite a 1/4 thick)...It this tranparent to the signal, or do I have a bust session? I've used GPS in winter storms on several occasions, but not for OPUS...Dont' want to add any bias (other than my own, which I can't help) into these experiments...

What say ye' experts?

TM, but should apply to any antenna..

I'm no expert, but I think you will be alright. I have run sessions where a couple inches of snow has accumulated on the antenna, and have talked to people that have had as much as 6 inches of snow on an antenna without problems. If that much snow doesn't cause a problem, I think a quarter of an inch of ice wouldn't either.

well ice is frozen water and gps uses light waves (radio waves) light bounces off water ,so i would say that the signal was somewhat obstructed,i'm no expert either but it is dependent on the energy of the radio wave also
