new GPS

I've finally obtained GPS. Ashtech Z-Extreme (It's county equipment: more on county politics in a later thread).

I have a short attention span, and feel that despite several GPS seminars and workshops, I know precious little.

I told my vendor I'd like a short lesson with none of the fine details, as I would rather get in the field first and not try to memorize hours of training lectures (my brain shuts down after about 30 minutes).

Is this a poor approach? Should I get more training before field experimentation?

Thanks

this is how we did it...it has its benefits, if you can survive the frustration...

for a case of beer or a bottle of scotch, i can probably come up for a day or two...maybe a case of beer and lunch...

what kind of software are you running at the data collector end?

One of the good things about banging your toe and stubbing your head a few times is that you know exactly what questions to ask. You will be motivated to stay awake for the answers.

Be careful. Practice on things where you already know the answer. Put your manuals in a plastic bag in the truck and dig in when you get stuck.

Expect to make mistakes. Then, when you do, it is exactly what you expected.

Don't wait until you are angry to ask for help. It's easier to learn when you are not ticked off.

I'll add Phils standard answer since he didn't...

Go and work with the equipment in a place you already know the answers....

Best training you'll find (except Phil's seminars of course). That's exactly what we did for weeks when we first got the Locus system. We "trained" on a local control network until we were satisfied we had at least a basic understanding of what we were doing before positioning anything for project needs.
