How are the Ipaqs performing in the cold? Better or worse than the 48's? Any other performance problems? Thanks.

i've used my iPAQ at about 10 degrees Fahrenheit...didn't notice any real problems directly related to the device, although i kept dropping the @##$%%^^&&** stylus in the snow...had to resort to using fingerless mitts which is what i do with a 48...
overall, i'm still not sold on iPAQs...the cable-less feature is inviting, but i am not convinced they are as durable as i would need them to be day-to-day...the expansion unit seems to come loose rather often, requiring a re-start to the program i use...
when i grow up, i want to try one of DAP's CE units...it looks like a better idea than the iPAQ...

I use a dowel tied to a string looped around my neck to pusk the keys on my Leica durning cold weather when I have my gloves on. Maybe a "stylus on a string" would work. There are a lot of after market stylus out there that have pocket clips like a pen, you could hook one of them up.
I still think a keyboard is nice to have. Touch screen is cute but I'd rather the keypad. Symbol has some units that are touch screen and have a keypad plus are weather hardened. These units cost more than the iPaq, about $1200 I think but they seem to fill the bill better than the iPaq, for data collection.

XYZ Works offers a rugged Environmental Case for the Compaq IPAQ CE unit. Checkout their web site and have a look at their product: "Surveyors Window Case".
I purchased one of these Cases, I'm pretty happy with it...

prior to having an iPAQ with a stylus, i used a very technologically sophisticated twig to push buttons on the 48...and the truth be known, i have now resorted to leaving the stylus attached to the iPAQ and have once again used my high-tech data entry assistant...
a 3-pack of stylus costs about $11...twigs are much cheaper...
