POO8 & Operating System update 2.12
Posted By reily smith on 6/13/2007 at 8:53 PM

I had some free time and thought I would upgrade my PM3’s so they would be ready to go when the RTK upgrades are available. I read the post below about the PM3 Firmware P008 and thought I would not bother with loading it. I followed the instructions for the Operating System update and it would not complete the loading process – finally did the “ESC-ENTER-POWER” and it seemed to load when restarted; however, when trying to click on the Surveying or Mobile Mapping icons, I get an error message saying “No Application found.” I have loaded P008 onto the machine and reloaded the 2.12 update. No change.

I loaded P008 first on my other PM3, then the 2.12 Operating System and it seems to work fine.

The system information is the same on both machines. Any ideas of how I can correct my first mistake?

according to the information of the update procedure, you can run a rescue image of the operating system that load some basic operating system features like the autoloader utility. you have to do the enter-escape-power thing five times, and in the sixth the receiver will boot with the rescue image, and then do the system update in the following order:

PM3 OS v 2.12
GPS firmware P008
Applications v 2.01

hope that it helps

You can try to reinstall the OS again and see if that takes care of it. It sounds like you have an incomplete installation.

This happened to me once before, I had to send the receiver in to have the OS and software installed, unfortunately you may have to do the same.

I was told that much like a PC you should never interupt the uploading procedure.

You have three tasks to do. The operating system, GPS firmware, and the Surveying / MobileMapping Application.

Please do all three.

Thank you Javier, Brett & Phil. I'm working on following page 3 of the instructions per Javier and reloading; however, I've surfed around the FTP directory and cannot find the 3rd installation step: "Applications v 2.12." Could someone give me a link and maybe tell us what this "Surveying/MobileMapping Application" does?

The Surveying/MobileMapping Application is the actual data collection software on each unit that you use while in the field to collect data.

The software is located here:

PM3 is still d.o.a. & App. 2.01 won't open

Today I’m yearning for the good old days and Curta Calculators. Following Javier’s suggestion to run a rescue image did not allow 2.12 Operating System to load properly. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you for the link Brett; however, when I try to open the file “PM3V201NCSA.zip” with Winzip, I get an error message: “Winzip cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive.” I downloaded the file again, but Winzip still doesn’t like it! Again, I would be grateful for any help.

Begin with the application note named

Latest versions of PM3 FW & SW.pdf

I often have trouble with the files downloaded using the web browser. Two or three or four tries into it I have a good file. More than ten years ago Creighton suggested that I get WS_FTP. I have purchased it for every one of my computers since.

http://www.ipswitch.com

There are other good ftp client programs out there. That is just the one I use at home. Last night I used it to download GNSS Solutions and MobileMapper Office.

When you use WinZip remember to extract to the folder names.

I was on the phone this morning with somebody who has a newer version of WinZip than mine. He does not have that check box for the folder names but when he extracted the files it created all the folders in the temporary folder he set up for the task. I am behind on my WinZip version.

PM3 updating saga
Posted By reily smith on 6/15/2007 at 1:20 PM

Thank you Phil. You’ve told me several times to get some kind of an ftp client program. It just seems like another piece of software to purchase and learn that I would only use for Magellan updates – all other downloads I require work just fine with my browser. I was finally able to unzip the Promark3 Surveying & Mapping Software Application Rev. 2.01 May 18 2007” using another computer with WinZip 11.1, save it to CD, and use the newer computer with a card reader to load it –this PM3 now seems to work just fine. I’ve completed the 3 steps for one PM3.

What do you think I should do to get my other PM3 (the unforgiving little sucker) working?

My steps to solving problems are as follows:

1. Kick it in the pants doing a reboot or a reset. For the ProMark3 the reset instructions are in the reference manual.

2. Make sure I follow the instructions. Sometimes that means asking somebody to watch me do it.

3. Contact tech support and make sure my stuff is up to date. You may have seen an example of this in my Mount Madonna photo mapping project. Rick put my feet on the right path. RTFM with current software is often the right answer.

4. With current tools I try the current instructions.

5. When I am sold on the idea that I am doing everything right but it does not work it is time for one of two things:

5a - Hire somebody to show me how it is supposed to work.

5b - Get it fixed

You made one work properly so you may not need better help. If you are ready for 5b the repair process begins on the web page at

have you been able to fix it? if not. have you followed the instructions detailed in the page 3 of this document?

ftp://ftp.magellangps.com/Land%20Survey/PM3/Application%20Notes/Updating%20PM3%20Operating%20System.pdf

or your problem now it's only with the installation of the surveying and mapping software contained in the file PM3V201NCSA.zip. I use winrar and I never had a problem with it. Maybe if you do all the update since the beginning, starting with a full reset to the rescue image according to the instructions of the document mentioned above, finally you can make it work.

Good luck

If nothing works, go to the final instruction in Phil's last post

Javier -- I did try the instructions per page 3, but it didn't help. I never thought of Winrar - thanks, I'll try that the next time I have trouble unzipping a file. Please see below directed at Phil.

Tried the reset procedure per the 19 December 2006 instructions: Utilities>GpsReset then tapped Cold Reset then tapped OK etc. – didn’t seem to help. Tried the software reset (EXC+ENTER+IN) per page 175 of the reference manual and it didn’t seem to help either. Tried reloading following your instructions and the download instructions exactly! Phil, bless your little pea pickin’ heart, it now works.

Thanks to all of you for bearing with me.
