LOCUS Download Issue
Posted By Bruce Edwards on 10/12/2006 at 2:11 PM

I have two Locus receivers I use for airport survey work. I recently purchased a Promark3 unit, which works great, with once exception. During a recent field job I found I could not download my LOCUS data. I uninstalled all Ashtech Software (GNSS, Mobile Mapper and Ashtech Solutions) and then reinstalled Ashtech Solutions. Download works fine through the IR port. Once I install GNSS solutions however I cannot download from the Locus. We found the same issue on a second laptop. Any suggestions?

Known issue, discussed here at length.

You have to download the Locus on one PC with Ashtech Solutions, and then move the data to the other PC with GNSS Solutions.

The GNSS overwrites a dll that is needed to download the Locus, they can't both be on the same machine.

Engine32.dll is the only dll of the same name in Ashtech Solutions and GNSS Solutions. It is different in each. BUT, and this is a big but, many softwares place dll files in a lot of other places besides the program (bin)directory.

Mike are you saying that Ashtech Solutions and GNSS Solutions cannot be run on the same computer? I have a dual boot setup on my computer with a C & D defined drive. If I want to play with GPS files, I only have to tell one version to look on the other drive.

I did it because I was told not to run GNSS in Win 98. Ashtech Solutions is happy in Win 98 as well as some other older programs that I just prefer.

Not sure, I have no experience with a dual boot setup. I just know that it works like this:

1. You can download your Locus with Ashtech Solutions on your PC.
2. You install GNSS Solutions on the same PC.
3. You can no longer download your Locus.

I still have the Sokkia Processor V1.10 software. It has the locus download as a seperate file It might work because it sets up the programs under a directory named Sokkia. It does run under windows 2000 but I don't know about windows xp but I'd think it should. Give me hollar if you think a copy might help.

We have a PC in our show room, running WIN2000 Pro, this PC has GNSS Solutions and Ashtech Solutions, MobileMapper Office all installed on the same hard drive. We can download PM2 Serial, PM3 USB & Serial, Locus IR with No Problems at all. So the claim of " you can't have both Ashtech Solutions & GNSS Solution installed on the same PC is not valid". This an out the box install with No Problems at all. Now you have to be very carefull with ActiveSynce which can occupy the com port that the IR is trying to connect with and can not see it because it is not avilable. Fred Youna

Godd to know. My next update of hardware will be to allow Carlson 2007 to operate. Until thr next upgrade of GNSS Solutions, and or I get PM3s I will use AS 2.7 for the majority of my work. Just more comfortable there. Still may keep a dual boot for other legacy programs.

One thing to keep in mind is that, Magellan claims GNSS Solutions has a better algorithem processer. I can vouch for this claim. We processed same data files in both Ashtech Solutions & GNSS and found that more vectors passed in GNSS than in Ashtech Solutions. These were data files collected with PM2's and they had a lot of noise / mutipath /loss of lock so on. So if you find your self with a data set that Ashtech Solutions can not fix a vector or 2, try running it thru GNSS.
