pbs downloading a z-12
Posted By cyril romieu on 11/26/2001 at 8:07 AM

I have some pbs when downloading my z-12 receiver
I tried Hose and rcs/download but it failed, giving a message according to which there's a memory error or too many checksum errors
I tried to use the RAMDUMP procedure but this is the same story...

Is there anyboddy having the faintest idea on how getting back my data?

thanks

on the receiving side, are you storing the data to a local drive or a network drive ?? You have to download to a local drive in my experience. Otherwise ya get checksum errors.

cyril,

You indicate your having a downloading problem, but you neglect to indicate some important details.

What operating system are you using on your PC ?
Is this a desk top -or- laptop ?
What version(s) of the hose.exe & RCS download are you using.

The recommened version of msdos hose.exe is Version 5.5.
If your using an older msdos version, it may not be Y2K compatible. The recommended version of Windows RCS is Version 3.2. Both of which are availble at no cost from the Ashtech FTP server.

A lot of checksum errors can indicate the selected baud rate is too high for the device. Do other devices download OK thru the same serial I/O Port ?

Please contact Ashtech Technical Support @1-800-229-2900.

Thanks for your answer
here are some more details
I m using a desk top
I m using hose version 5.4 (which is y2k compatible)
I managed to download withthe same hardware for three days and then suddenly this problem
if it can be helpful for you, there is also an other message saying that there is an error -5808, datatype error

I think I need to send my z-xII for maintenance but I would like to get my data first

thanks

Cyril,
Try HOSE -I (from the DOS prompt). This may or may not work, but it's worth a try.

unfortunately, it failed...

Cyril,
The datatype error is indicative of memory corruption. The only other thing I can suggest is an internal memory reset (power on while holding the up arrow ^, when the warning appears, press YES). This will NOT clear your data, and might allow you to recover it.

I tried...

Now, I have an error when starting the receiver: it cannot determine size memory (according to it I have 68302 eqhr free!!!)

i tried again a dump: it is now only 1Mo whereas it was 6Mo.. and not more usefull

At this point, I would consider the data irretrievable. An external memory reset should make the receiver operable, allowing it to recognize the full 6mb, but the data is not recoverable.

Since you got the "data type" error, please try Ramdump with the following options:

Perform a RAMDUMP, then run

HOSE -RS RAMDUMP on the downloaded data files in the same directory

If Hose will not even recognize the image file from hard disk, it may be necessary to edit the RAMDUMP file manually with a utility such as Norton.

If the data still cannot be recovered with RAMDUMP, it is probably lost. Depending on how critical the data is, we (Thales ) could try to recover it here, but there are no guarantees. If you wish for us to try to recover the data here, please contact our customer servicedepartment at 1-800-229-2400.

If you do an external reset on the receiver, all data will definitiely be lost. Watch for any memory-related or other errors then, after an internal reset as well.

Cyril,

One additional thing to try.
How old is this partcular Z-12 ?

GPS receivers use an internal Lithium battery to protect data & user defaults. These internal lithium batteries have a lifespan of about 5 years. The internal Lithium batteries may need to be replaced.

A quick field check can root out this problem.
From Screen 9, enter a SITE ID, then from Screen 8 perform an
Enter-555-Enter (Save Parameters).

Then power OFF/ON the receiver, browse back to screen 9.
See if the SITE ID you enterd was retained, if it was not, this may be a good indication, the internal Lithium's need replacement.
