Battery Power

I know someone who powers his GPS Units with big generators. He says the noise keeps animals away and other people from stealing his equipment. I asked him abnout the cost effect into his work and he said he didn't care he charges his clients for the fuel and generators. Seems a little strang to me . I wonder if he's on to somehting about the theft. These things weigh 400 lbs a piece and he hauls them around on a trailer. Anyone else have better ideas for GPS theft?

My RTK box

I had a box made for my RTK base station. It has lots of ventilation and a locking lid. It houses the electronic gear in a tray near the top and two deep cycle batteries in the bottom.

The guy who built it asked me if I wanted wheels on it. I told him no way. If I hate carrying the thing with the batteries out of it then maybe it will stay in one place with the batteries in it.

Nobody ever carried off my RTK box nor even pestered my cables after that. My name, address, phone, and pager number is in plain view on top of the box. Sometimes it gets a note on there asking people to page me if they see this box.

That box is a pain to carry but it is very good insurance. It is rather unique looking and a digital picture of it would be easy to share with the survey society asking folks if they have seen it.
