Kinematic

I have been running static with the Locus since May and now we plan on
trying the some Kinematic for topo. We will establish control around the job
with static then come back to run the Kinematic I've read Bill's three part post
on the topic but I'm still confused about a few things...

Do you set the base "and" rover to the same rec interval ?

Rec interval of 2 sec for 10 sec occupation?

I would create a D file with the handheld "starting" with
the rover initializing on one of my know static points for 10 sec ?

I plan to try this around the yard this weekend ..
thanks, Steve

Steven,

Yes, you need to set the Locus Rec Intervals the same for both the Base & Rover Units. This can be accomplished in the office using the Locus Download S/w:

Locus | Tools | Field Unit Link | Receiver | Set Receiver Param's

You can clear the Locus Receiver memory & change the "Rec
Intervals" in the office before you head outside. Activate the 5 SV Kinematic Alarm for the Locus Rover Unit.

A "Rec Inteval" of 2 seconds, or 5 seconds is advisable for Kinematic GPS Surveys. You should collect a mininum of 2 epochs per point.

Or you can use the HP48 - IR to establish these Parameters in the field. Ashtech has a Kinematic Kit, which includes a Kinematic Intialization Bar. This "Init Bar" has a known distance of 20 Cm. Set up your Tripod as normal, attach the "Init Bar" between the Locus Base Unit & the Tribrach/Tripod.

Attach the Locus Rover Unit to the opposite end of the "Init Bar". Perform your Kinematic Intialization & then remove the Locus Rover Unit from the "Init Bar", then mount to the Range Pole & begin you Kinematic GPS Survey.

Bob .. thanks I understand how to setup the receivers, and about the bar, which I do not have but how do you turn off the kinematic alarm after it goes off ?
I know you have to inialize again on a know point but this does not turn off the rec alarm. Do you turn off the rec and start up again?

The alarm will stop automatically as soon as the sattelite configuration is suitable for kinematic work.

If you're getting sporadic and intermittent kinematic warnings, might as well go to the coffee shop for awhile, until the PDOP improves. (you DID do a plot of your PDOP for the day before going out didn't you?)

Yes I always check the planning.. 8 sv's and PDOP below 3
So it will go off by itself when it locks back on .. thanks..

Kinematic works extremely well as long as you have seven or 8 sats, otherwise you risk losing lock.

Even with seven sats, about 5% of your topo shots will fail, so plan for this and overshoot the important areas of your topo.

I dont attempt kinematic at all unless I read 7 to 8 satellites. PDOP spikes mean trouble.

Much depends upon nearby trees.

If your PDOP timing is good, and you walk around nearby trees, you can get all the shots you need.

Take care to note the kinematic shots necessary for a re-initialization since the numbering is not easily accessible with the current handheld.

HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE CORRECTED in future versions.
