Precise ephemerides in Solutions 2.5
Posted By Jon Charlton on 10/16/2001 at 5:37 AM

Hi All

As a (relatively) new Promark user in the UK I have been getting a lot of useful info (and some laughs!) from browsing this board, so firstly, thanks to all those contributors.

I am new to Ashtech kit, having previously used only that bright yellow stuff...what's it called again? I have always used precise ephemeris data in the past when post-processing, on the grounds that as it is available, and free, why not? Unfortunately Solutions 2.5 doesn't seem to support the use of PE, without forking out $2500 for something called Dr K (?).

Can anyone comment on whether a) PE is worth using on L1 vectors and b) is there any other way to get PE into Solutions?

Many thanks (in anticipation of your help),

JC.

At this point in time, the only way I know of to utilize a Precise Ephemeris with Ashtech Solutions is to use Dr. K to convert it.

However, with ProMark2s, being single frequency units, I do not think you'll see any benefit to using the Precise Ephemeris anyway.

Hopefully, we will see the ability to use Precise Ephemerides in a future release of Solutions.

Some people believe the sun rises and sets in a precise ephemeris. In doing GPS work since 1994 I never wanted to take the time to wait for a precise ephemeris to be ready for me. It seemed like I always had a bunch of survey chiefs yowling for coordinates so I kept churning them out as soon as I got the daily adjustments done.

Deral jumped through many hoops on his re-measurement and re-adjustment of the Lawton, Oklahoma network we did a bunch of years ago. What he said on the message board at http://www.osls.org was that I did a good job of doing the QC on what he did to the tune of not more than 0.040 meters. Gosh, guys, that was many moons ago when there was not 28 SV's and SA to deal with.

Sweat the precise ephemeris if you feel the need. I never got hired by the NGS to do anything so I never felt the need.
