Recording interval and time on site

It is a question that came up again this morning and I often wonder why it seems to be so confusing. Since it is confusing I try to be patient and give honest answers to honest questions.

The recording interval needs to be set to an appropriate value to match with the occupation time.

The recording interval at all of the receivers used in a particular session should match. It is not mandatory but if one receiver is set to record data at 10 seconds, another is set to record data at 5 seconds, and a third is set to record data at 2 seconds what they share in common is the data recorded at 10 seconds. None of the extra data recorded at two of the receivers will be used in the data processing. It is only the common data that matters.

If we pair this with a CORS that records data at a 15 second rate the receiver that records data at five seconds will match at the 15 second rate. The other two receivers will match at a 30 second interval. Despite this extended time between epochs you should be able to get a good vector with a long static session.

A static session does not really benefit from fast data recording. One hour of data recorded at a ten second interval is as good as one hour of data at a two second interval. The data recorded at the ten second interval will take up less space on the hard drive. If a static session takes an hour to get a good solution it is not a good idea to double the recording interval and cut the occupation time in half. It does not work that way.

During a Stop&Go session a recording interval of 2 seconds will support an occupation time of 15 seconds. A ten second recording interval with a 15 second occupation time is probably going to give poor results. There is just not much data to work with when the receivers are set up that way.

Remember, if the base is set to ten seconds and the rover is set to two seconds that is the same thing as if both were set to ten seconds.

I hope you folks won't mind me hijacking the message board for a little tech tip. This seemed like a big deal as the sun was coming up this morning.
