Locus IR Port Problem
Posted By Mitchell Cosler on 8/6/2001 at 5:51 PM

Apparently one of our Locus receiver's IR port quit working. The two other units connect to the com port "OK". We have only had units for about six months.

Is the IR port failure a common problem with the Locus units?

Mitchell, we had one go early this spring..The units were over a year and a half old at the time...Bill Martin said he had not heard of any going bad when ours went, but I don't know of recent tech support history....bob

Thanks for the response. I called our supplier, and they have had some IR ports go bad. Usually the weak ones go early on.

As you know, mighty disconcerting, especially with a days work in it.

Sometimes it is possible to recover the LOCUS data by placing the head of the IR cable within a couple inches of the LOCUS IR port, at the same height, and exactly aligned with the LOCUS IR port. Shading the IR port with a piece of paper can help recover the data also if the IR port is starting to go bad. Try these things if you haven't already.

Does this LOCUS unit have a solid green power light as well?

Try power cycling the LOCUS receiver too. Also, has any program such as Microsoft Active Synch taken control of one of your COM ports since you were connected to the other 2 LOCUS units? Once before, I saw a computer COM port become unusable after successfully connecting to another receiver. Make sure you can still connect to one of the other LOCUS units.

Richard,
I'm not at office now. I'll try your suggestions, of closeness & shading, in the morning. I did connect with the other Locus units before and after trying the apparently bad one severaly times. Thanks for the help.
