Static Control

Has anyone on this board ever set any static control within a high voltage electric line corridor? What are any problems associated with this? Any comments appreciated!!

Edward,

I have set a few points under high voltage transmission lines. I don't recall having any problems with the processed or adjusted data. The only problem location (other than typical trees and other obstructions) was on a site that tested various radio transmitter/receiver equipment. Later found that one of the frequencies being tested was something near the L1 signal for a DoD project. We had all kinds of problems on that one. Once they agreed to temporarily shut down their equipment for a couple of hours, I think we isolated our problem.
As far as hi-volt lines, I'm not sure what the potential for problems could be other than possible temporary obstruction or multipath from structures.

You might try Gregg Tuttle (gmtuttle@srpnet.com). He's on the
AZ BTR, and works for a public utility. I know their survey crews have done plenty of this. I've never had trouble with it, but have had problems close to large electric motors (3-phase 440v well pumps).

Do you think the electric motors affected the L1 signal itself or would it be electromagnetic field affecting circuit boards or other physical hardware? Myself, I haven't a clue.

J.D.,

My guess would be that the strong EM field was FUBARing the hardware. These points were on the well pad, less than 3' from the pump motor.

If Edward contacts Gregg, maybe he'll post the response here so everyone will know.

Brian,

Thanks. I had not really considered EMF problems due to well motors. I'm sure, being in an oil field area, I would have sooner or later subjected myself to the very same problem. I will definately keep this one in mind.

I would also certainly be interested to know what Mr. Tuttle's experiences are with the Hi-Volt subject.
