Locus & PDA's
Posted By KH PLS on 7/14/2001 at 2:08 AM

I have seen a picture of the Locus with
a PDA here and there. It seems like it
is going full blast in Europe.

Is the Locus going to be hooked up with
a PDA in the US?

From what I understand the new software for the field runs on Compaq's Ipaq 3150 and possibly other CE devices.

Magellan / Ashtech Precsion Products is on the verge of shipping Survey Control II. The S/w is released on a Compact Flash card that will insert into the expansion slot on the Compaq Ipaq 3150.

Magellan will be selling the Compaq IpaQ 3150 model.
Black & Grey Scale display.

Survey Control II will be compatible with the Locus receiver via the IR (Infra-Red) connection, similar to the HP-48.

It will also be compatible with the Z-Xtreme & Z-Surveyor via a USB connection (on the IpaQ) & DB-9 connection (On the GPS Receiver).

Magellan also has a data collector pouch & tripod / Range pole mounting kit to accompany the use of the Compaq Ipaq.

Survey Control will support Static, Stop & Go and Kinematic (OTF) style field surveys. Survey Control creates and stores a D-file
(attribute info) on the Compaq Ipaq, this is downloaded from the Ipaq into Ashtech Solutions post Processing S/w along with the corresponding GPS reiver files for processing. Real-Time functions will not be supported in this release.

Stan,

There are two types of kinematic. Stop-and-Go is used for occupying survey points (stop, plumb over the point, and log data, then go to the next point). Continuous kinematic is used while moving (e.g.: on a vehicle while driving to define a road centerline, or walking a curb line or other topographic feature). Hope this clarifies the issue.

User interface

How does the user interface work on the Compaq? Does the Ashtech controller read jot/script or does a keyboard popup on screen that the user must type in values and descriptions?

It's a "virtual" keyboard.

Thank you...I could not think of a suitable word to describe pop-up, but virtual is it.
