Securing Equipment

I contacted Seco to suggest they develop a product that would lock a GPS or Robotic unit to the tribrach and lock the tribrach to the tripod. From there a piece of chain and pad locks would finish the job. They replied with a few suggestions on how this could be done, but then stated that they "see no market for it." Anyone interested in equipment security please contact Mike Copeland at mcopeland@surveying.com and tell him that you'd buy it if they'd make it.

hand held impact drill and epoxy, set a big hook eye into the pavement under your tripod and attach a bicycle chain and padlock to it.

That takes care of the legs, now let me figure out about what's on top of the legs.....

I've actually rigged together a decent security setup for my Locus. I need to get back to Home Depot and get the part numbers then I'll post the details and a picture. I carry 3/4" I.D. 30" long pipe with a hole drilled near the top that I drive flush and chain the units down with when there's nothing convenient nearby to chain to.

Mike, they should be able to install a very accurate low-jack type device in a PM2. Once activated it sends out its position every hour. If you find the unit, you'll probably find the tripods, tribrachs or poles also. Trouble is if you don't find it in 8 hours, the batteries are dead.

I've helped out that surveyor with the Ashtech Reliance a couple of times. He was going out to get some info today, and I thought to remind him that I had set the recording time to 5 minutes, as I had a spot with a lot of sky junk and wanted to see the results. He asked, how did you do that? I guess he has been taking 1 minute shots since he got it(used) because he didn't know how to change it. Just uses it for monitoring wells so no rocket science is needed. So what is the good and the bad over various times for record logs with said device? He uses a pole, I used a bipod, so I could more readily hold the receiver and hit the keys. He may have a pole bracket somewhere but damn if I could find it.

Mike,

I did the eye hook thing on a control network I set up in ID. Since I was there drilling and setting the disks prior to the GPS measurements, I just went ahead and drilled and set an eye hook too. Nothing walked away. Not always very easy to set these though. I think SECO is not seeing the big picture with all of the GPS and robotics out there now.
