Mike, pick up an HP48 with a basic COGO card from SMI. Cost of the 48 and card is basically free. It will serve you well and the price is a low. Cheaper than used from e-bay sometimes.

Damn, this is like an easter egg hunt and I'm waaayyyyy too late..Who got the prize?

Also, check out this link. It brings you to a bunch of surveying utilities, a few of which are shareware cogo from Mississippi AND a shareware program that writes legals from TDS coord files. If you just reformat the lines around in your cr5 files you'll get the inverses quickly for all cross ties....see:
http://www.sonic.net/~trollhei/survsoft.html

also look at Ziff-Davis publishing. They have a huge shareware collection of all kinds of stuff. check this one out in particular, since I know you have a pocket pc.....

OK, truth be told....

I did a demo yesterday on PM2kin, shot the ends of four parking lot stripes, measured them at 10 feet with a tape.

Just wanted a quickie inverse to see how the distances checked.

Of course, what I found out is that the knucklehead who striped the lot was off 0.06 on the 3rd stripe. It's hard to find good help nowadays!

I got my distances out of Solutions too, btw. Set up a Ground grid, called 0014 5000, 5000 and oriented to 0017, then looked at the coordiates of the 0015 and 0016 along that same axis. Not bad for a salesman, huh?

Mike:

Buy a $10 TI calculator and read about the rectangular to polar conversion keys, or just use the Sin/Cos functions.

Remember a thread a little while back about Ashtech solutions software and cogo capabilities......

subract the eastings, then subtract the northings, then apply pathagarens(sp) theorm, the get your bearing using ATAN.

If you don't have cogo, and need cogo, get cogo, it's cheap sometimes free and easy.

I sure wish

Ashtech Solutions would allow:

1: Allow the user to select the elevation, and then perform inverses, at ground elev.
2.) Allow the user to put a constant in the bearings, so as to "rotate" all the displayed bearings cc or ccw.

This would sure be handy.
